When the Storm Clouds Gather

The coronavirus storm our country is facing is historic in scope and magnitude. It has created a climate of fear and uncertainty unlike any event in recent history. Impacting the health, emotional and financial well being of most people across our country and around the world, it has changed our way of life in a profound way. Many people have reacted with fear and anxiety while struggling with isolation and questioning how they will survive. In short, it has been a very difficult and challenging time for many individuals.

Scripture tells of a time when a storm of another type arose suddenly and threatened the very boat containing Jesus and His disciples. We read in Luke chapter eight:

23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.

24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re

going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging

waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 “Where is your faith?”

he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

Jesus demonstrated again and again His power to heal. He also displayed His sovereignty over nature, commanding a violent storm to be still. While the current pandemic was a surprise to many, it has not taken our Heavenly Father by surprise. Jesus knew we would have trouble and tells us in John 16:

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In

this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the

world.”

Does your storm seem to threaten your very being? Jesus reminds us that he has command over the storms of this world and in Him we can find a peace that transcends all of our circumstances. When you are in the boat with Jesus, you know you will reach the other side!
